The Township of Rideau Lakes invites residents and visitors to step back in time and experience one of the oldest civic traditions at the Rideau Lakes Town Crier Competition, taking place during the annual Civic Day Community Picnic on Monday, August 3, 2026 at 1:00 p.m., at Hanna Park in Portland.
Aspiring Town Criers will compete before the public by delivering a short original "cry" of 100 words or less celebrating the Township of Rideau Lakes, the Civic Day festivities, local heritage, and the spirit of community. Each presentation will showcase the participants' voice, enthusiasm, creativity, and theatrical flair as they compete for the honour of becoming the Township's official Town Crier.
The competition promises an entertaining afternoon of history, pageantry, and community pride. Spectators will enjoy the booming proclamations, and timeless tradition that has welcomed visitors and announced important events in communities for centuries. The successful Town Crier will serve as an ambassador for the Township, representing Rideau Lakes at municipal ceremonies as paid appearances, including festivals, heritage celebrations, tourism events, and the annual provincial Town Crier competition. The Town Crier Competition forms part of the Civic Day Community Picnic, sponsored by the Portland Community Enhancement Committee, featuring family activities, entertainment, and opportunities to celebrate everything that makes Rideau Lakes a vibrant and welcoming community. Residents and visitors of all ages are encouraged to attend, cheer on the competitors, and help welcome a new chapter in Rideau Lakes' heritage.
