Morton School (The Pimple)
24 Briar Hill Road, Morton
This octagonal schoolhouse was built on a hill in the model village of Morton likely about 1852/53. The walls were erected by George Morton with bricks manufactured at his brickyard in the village. At a time when most one room schools were rectangular log or frame structures, “The Pimple” was unusual in several respects. It was built with casement windows (relatively uncommon in this area) in six sides to maximize the available light, the other two sides being necessary for the entrance and a blackboard. This is one of only two remaining octagonal schools in the province. Used as a school until 1900.
