Abandoned
Heritage Information Sheet
419 Hartsgravel Road, Philipsville, ON
The Holy Japanese Martyrs Catholic Church is dedicated to the 26 Missionaries and Priests that were executed by the Japanese in 1597. The first burials marked with an engraved stone are Myers: Richard died 1851 and his wife Mary died in 1849. The cemetery is inactive but is owned and maintained by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kingston. There are many stones that give the birth location as a County in Ireland and dozens that show a birth date before the Potato Famine that created the immigration to the area in 1847 and 1848. The cemetery is located on Lot 21 of the 7th Concession of Bastard on the Hartsgravel Road. The Church, now a private residence, stands on a hill across from the Cemetery.
