In 1807, Lot 18 in the 6th Concession of Bastard was purchased by James Schofield. That same year, Anna Knowlton, wife of Benedict McCollum, was the first burial on that lot. In 1833, when Archibald Denny bought the lot, the cemetery had become a regional facility for the Chantry and Harlem area. For the next 100 years the cemetery continued in that capacity and had 68 engraved stones, five unmarked stones and several burials without markers. In 1975, the Township of Bastard and South Burgess moved unbroken and engraved stones from the Bond or Elliott Cemetery, the Eyre Cemetery, the Alford Cemetery, the Hudson, Trotter or Chamberlain Cemetery, the Byington or Alford Cemetery and the Day Cemetery to the Denny Cemetery. There now should be 123 engraved stones in the Denny Cemetery. There are two graves with brass plaques denoting that the person interred was a member of the Leeds Militia and fought in the war of 1812-1814. The Cemetery is maintained by the Township of Rideau Lakes.
